Life this winter has just passed me by

Life this winter has just passed me by

Well we did finally get snow and LOTS of it.  We finished off with more than 25 feet for the year.  Yes, that was a record which we just cruised by.  I did get to do a lot of skiing this year.   And of course a lot of digging out as well.  It was so bad at times for us that we had to use a snowmobile for a few weeks to get to our house.  The four wheel drive with snow chains just couldn’t make it up the mountain.  I am glad I didn’t spend the whole winter up there but I’m kind of sad that I didn’t get to see the spring and summer up there.  I guess you got to take the good with the bad.   The new home owners had to get some serious snow removal equipment to get in and out during the storms.

Well spring has sprung and I am setting down in ole Garrett County.  I have been getting established in a lot of the local organizations and along the way I am glad to see my daughter help out when it doesn’t interfere with her social life.  There was a time when I was worried that I wouldn’t find something to do around here, well that has changed.  My time has been taken up by work, soccer, Lions Club, ACS Relay for Life (I said this would wait, but it didn’t,) and a few other local community events.  The rest of the family will soon make the move out here in June.  Hard to believe my son graduates High School in another week.

The trees are blooming and it is starting to get quite picturesque again.  Time to get ready for the summer tourist season.  New attractions for me to investigate.

Let it Snow – Wisp Needs it to be cold

Let it Snow - Wisp Needs it to be cold

In the winter time, the heart beat around the lake is Wisp Ski Resort.  That is what brings in the tourist during this glacial time of the year.   We had some early snow back in October, but that was only a tease.  It was enough to force me to go out and get a 4-wheel drive vehicle (my driveway is brutal.)   The temperatures in October and November never stay cold enough to justify opening the slopes.  This past week though, we had five inches of snow in places around Garrett County.   The humming started up on the mountain as the temperatures plummeted below freezing.   That humming would be the sounds of the world-renowned snow making machines strategically placed along 90% of the slopes.   Wisp has refined the snow making process so well that other resorts have come here to duplicate it.  Garrett County has an average of 100″ already, but they are able to add to it with the capabilities of making almost four tons of snow each night.

While others can’t stand the snow…we say “let it snow, let it snow!!!” Wisp is hoping to open December 5th.  Check their website for up-to-date slope conditions.

I’m delighted to see a real bakery in Deep Creek

I'm delighted to see a real bakery in Deep Creek

I pass it more than twice a day on the way to work, so I decided to stop the other day. Boy am I glad I did. I miss the smell of homemade bread and pastries. I think I gained 10 pounds just walking in there. We used to have a good bakery around just about every corner growing up. It is definitely a dying breed.

The Fazen Bakery and Catering Company actually had two locations; Grantsville and Accident.  But they are only maintaining the one on Rt 219 in Accident now.   Looking at their selections I don’t know where to start.  In my brief visit the other day, I road tested the glazed donuts and the lady fingers.  Good Lady Fingers are hard to find.

Check their website for current information but you can find them open right now for the fall;

  • Tuesday – Thursday 6 AM – 1 PM
  • Friday – Sunday 8 AM – 2 PM
  • Closed on Monday

I hope you enjoy this bakery as much as I did.  Don’t laugh if you see my car parked there more than once… I promise to work it off at the gym.

Have a great day.

First shot of Deep Creek Lake

First shot of Deep Creek Lake

I started my new career here in McHenry, MD.  I know, I know it really sucks for me.  A couple things about me while I build this website, just in case someone finds this new site; I am the manager of Long & Fosters Deep Creek Lake Resort and Sales office located on Garrett Highway.   I have been a nomad for a good part of my adult life.  I grew up outside of Pittsburgh, served in the Army, came back to Pittsburgh,  lived in Johnstown and recently have been a very active community member of Frederick, MD.  I am firm believer in work hard, play hard and family comes first.

When the opportunity came up for Deep Creek Lake, I knew I just had to come out here.  This place is absolutely gorgeous.  There are so many State Parks out this way.  It reminds me of my childhood when we used to pack up the car on a Friday afternoon and head north to Kinzua Dam in Northern Western PA.  I was always outdoors, fishing, hunting, skiing, camping and just about anything esle you would expect from a Southwestern PA boy.

I have a passion for technology and will continue that passion here.  Hence, the new blog.  I have created and help maintain multiple websites for a variety of organizaions and clients.  I enjoy teaching what I know to just about anyone that will listen.   One of my other passions is Photography, so you will see plenty of shots of Garrett County now that I am here.

This is just the first of many post…the site is still under constuction at this point.  I am no longer personally selling real estate, however, I will put you in touch with some of the best agents around.  My personal connection are with some of the best across the US.  Please let me know if you plan on moving and see what I can do for you.

Have a great day.
